Vets, Boomers, Xers, NEXTers, Gen-Y... the workplace has never been more sophisticated than it is now. Leadership theorists say we are in the "complexity era" and our high tech knowledge oriented economy (where information overload is the norm) wears on all of us. Each generation has a different worldview (unique values, beliefs, attitudes, etc) and each have very different opinions about what they are expected to give to the job (and perhaps more importantly, what they expect the job will provide them). Leading these different generations takes finesse, sophistication, and energy. To make matters more interesting, the differences between each generation are exponentially increasing. Someone born in the 1930's did not have a worldview too different from someone born in the 1950's... but someone born in the 1960's has an incredibly different worldview from someone born in the 1980's. Technology is changing at the speed of light, and so is each generation.
But perhaps it's not as complex as all that. After all, we're all human. And though the forms of motivation may need to be augmented, the functions of what motivates people remains constant. Most leaders can do a great job of motivating, influencing, managing, and leading people of different generational backgrounds, with just a few tips and tricks. And once these skills are learned, they can easily be shared with others in your institution to breed a greater understanding and valuing of each other, and our generational backgrounds.
